| When you first arrive, you will be confronted by Prof. Rowan's assistant...again. He/she will ask how many Pokemon you caught, then suggest you visit the Trainers' School. Your friend went there, so you will want to make a visit there.
You will find your friend at the blackboard of the school, where he'll accept the Parcel from his mom. It contains a pair of town maps, one of which he will give to you before heading to the Oreburgh City Gym, which is your next destination. |
When you head north, you will meet the inventor of the Poketch, who is conducting a new promotional campaign. He'll have you look for three clowns in town and answer a question from each one. One is behind the Pokemon Center, another is at the entrance of the Jubilife TV building, and the other you can find in front of the Poketch Co. Answer yes to every question and you will earn Poketech coupons, which you will need to give to the inventor to receive a Poketech with four apps to start out with. After you get the Poktech, head east towards Route 203.
Upon arriving at Route 203, you will be confronted by your friend, in which will trigger a battle between the two of you.
After the battle, your rival will take off to head to Oreburgh City Gym. Follow him. Before you can make it to Oreburgh City though, you will have to fight several trainers and pass through a cave.
When you first enter the cave, you will be confronted by a man. Don't fret, for all he wants is to give you HM06 (Rock Smash), which allows you to smash certain rocks found around the cave. You can teach to any Pokemon you like, but you won't be able to use it ouside of battle until you earn the Oreburgh City Gym badge. Head east to arrive at Oreburgh City.

| When you arrive at Oreburgh City, one of the residents will take you straight to the Gym, where your rival is waiting at. He'll explain that the Gym Leader is gone into the mine, so head to the mine, which is located south of town. |
Oreburgh Mine
The mine is small, so finding the Gym Leader will be no problem. When you find him, he will open the Gym without a battle, so head out of the mine and back to the Gym to face him.
Oreburgh Gym
| There are two trainers in the Oreburgh Gym that you'll have to get through before you challenge the Gym Leader. Alternatively, you can take the long way around and skip the trainers entirely.

If you chose Turtwig or Piplup, you should have no problem with Roark. If you chose Chimchar though, you should at least go and catch a Machop on Route 207. Save your best Pokemon for Cranidos, which is Roark's strongest Pokemon. Be aware also that he will use Potions if his Pokemon are low on health, so watch out. |
When you defeat Roark, he will give you the Coal Badge, which will allow you to use HM06 (Rock Smash) outside of battle. You will also be treated to TM76 (Stealth Rock), which inflicts damage to your opponent every time they change Pokemon.
